Geriatric massage therapy is designed to address the specific needs of the elderly population. Massage for the elderly uses a gentle and light application of massage techniques and can include passive stretching. A light oil or lotion is used by the therapist to permit your muscles to be worked on without causing excessive friction to your skin. These techniques can help enhance blood circulation, improve balance and flexibility, improve posture, restore range of motion to your joints, relieve aches and pains as well as improve your immune system.
Geriatric massage can be especially helpful for maintaining and improving overall health as you age. It has been shown to relieve anxiety and provide comfort, especially in the “Undertouched” population.
If you have specific health conditions, you are advised to obtain written permission from your physician to proceed with massage. There are certain conditions for which massage is not recommended.
